Discipline and Value: The Issue with the Privileged Image

A contribution to the project “Terms and Conditions: The Legal Form of Images,” the seminar will focus on seminal texts and exemplary artworks that address a structure of differential “value” at work both in photographic representation and in society. The notion of value entered photographic discourse after a critique of representation, that had developed vis-à-vis the documentary tradition, redefined the authority of photographic images as rooted in legal power. We will take a close look at relations that exist between various notions of “value” in regard to the technical image and the disciplinary power that established the domains of their perception. The seminar seeks to facilitate a discussion on how artistic approaches assign “meaning” or “value” to phenomena, thereby elevating them to a privileged order of perception, and whether these approaches are bound by the limits of discipline.
