Lob der Polizei, 2021
In collaboration with Markus Dorfmüller
Color photography, Tweets, Essay, 24 × 15 cm, 96 Pages, Offset print
In “Lob der Polizei,” (Praising the Police) the riot police becomes the object of an aesthetic-theoretical investigation in its very own right.
Documenting their deployment during the G20 summit in 2017, Markus Dorfmüller’s objective large-format photographs bear witness to the riot police’s undeniable presence in the city.
The title assigns a programmatic form to these images: what the riot police do in the streets of the city is deeply connected to modern urban culture and its economy. To make this connection visible, a complete database of the 20,000 Twitter posts under the hashtag #G20HAM17 was created, which served as a communication channel for the police force.
An essay on the genesis and presence of the riot police makes it recognizable as a principle of an “ethical” education of the crowd, whose body masses ought to be physically separated from the spaces of codified power.
